Questions New Patients Ask Our Chiropractors
What is chiropractic?
Chiropractic is the most common natural healing art practiced in the world. It is based on spinal manipulation—the chiropractic adjustment—to treat segmental joint dysfunctions. In chiropractic circles, this is often called a subluxation or joint misalignment.
What is an adjustment?
An adjustment is another word for spinal manipulation. It removes joint fixations which are called subluxations by a chiropractor.
In chiropractic terms, a subluxation is when one or more bones (vertebrae) is out of alignment or not moving properly. This can put pressure on spinal nerves, decrease range of motion, and often cause pain. But like a cavity on your tooth, you can have a subluxation and not feel it.
Can I adjust myself?
A lot of people ask this question and it is not recommended. Chiropractors are highly trained to locate and safely adjust joint fixations. In this case, it is best if you “do not try this at home.”
Why do I sometimes hear a "popping" sound when I get adjusted?
When the chiropractor adjusts you, there is a change in pressure in your joint space as the bones move slightly. It is very much like the sound of a vacuum being released when a suction cup is pulled apart, or a pressurized soda can is opened.
Will it hurt?
Chiropractic adjustments should be painless. In the case of recent trauma or injury—when there is inflammation and muscle guarding—there can be temporary discomfort.
Most patients report feeling significant relief immediately following the adjustment. People often tell us they feel better than they have in years after they follow thru with their course of treatment.
How many adjustments will I need?
It all depends on what brought you to the chiropractor in the first place.
For some people, years of repetitive trauma and poor posture can be treated in one visit, while an instantaneous motor vehicle accident can lead to months of treatment.
It all depends on your age, your motivation, and your innate capacity to heal. Our chiropractors will individualize a treatment plan specific to your condition.
Can pregnant women and children be adjusted?
Yes. Chiropractic care is safe before, during and after pregnancy. Dr. Goldi was adjusted throughout her two pregnancies and found significant relief from the low back pain and aches associated with a normal pregnancy. Dr. Goldi even adjusts her children!
Children suffer significant trauma to their spines during childbirth and with the normal bumps and bruises associated with learning to walk, ride a bike, and climb a tree. Many families report that their children are healthier and suffer less illness once coming under chiropractic care.
Can I have chiropractic care after surgery?
Usually, yes. We use several forms of very gentle spinal manipulation that may be appropriate after surgery. Schedule a consultation via our online portal and our chiropractors in Aptos will outline your treatment options with you.
Will I receive medication for my pain?
No. Chiropractors do not prescribe medications.
I have osteoporosis. Can I get chiropractic care?
Yes. We use several forms of very gentle spinal manipulation that are safe for osteoporotic patients.
I don’t have pain. Do I need a chiropractor?
Perhaps. Not every subluxation causes pain.
Many patients who come in for a specific complaint find that regular chiropractic care prevents their problems from returning.
A lot of athletes utilize chiropractic care to ensure the best nerve flow and insist it has enhanced their performance.
New moms may bring in their newborn babies to have their spines checked out by our chiropractors to make sure they get the best start in life!
