Last week I had several Spider-People come creeping across the lobby, clinging to the counter, leaning towards the security of the surface they adhered themselves to, unable to stand up straight. One of my professors at Palmer College of Chiropractic West, I can’t recall which one, told us that Spider-Man would walk into my office. And last week, he came in, and brought more Spider-People besides. So, what’s going on? Most patients describe this as a pinched nerve, or as hip pain. That’s not what we call it.
It’s Acute Locked Back Syndrome
Acute Locked Back Syndrome presents like this:
You wake up with Moderate or Intense pain.
The pain is in your Low Back and localized to one side.
Everyone can tell your back is killing you because you’re leaning over to the side.
Its feels worse when trying to stand up straight.
You are unable to lean, even slightly, the other way.
There are several biomechanical and musculoskeletal reasons this happens:
Improper lifting or sitting, overexertion, trauma, or anatomical spinal abnormalities may contribute to the cause.
From a chiropractic perspective, your pelvis and lumbar spine are out of alignment, your joints don’t move right, and/or the muscles in your low back are in spasm. In severe cases, there may be a disc bulge: it hurts a lot!
Can You Help Me Doc?
Traditional treatment options simply mask the pain. These include over-the-counter (OTC) pain medications and non-steroidal-anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). If you go to your Primary Care Physician or Urgent Care facility, you may get an injection to relieve the pain and spasm. You may also get prescriptions for narcotic pain medications and muscle relaxers.
While these medications may take the edge off, they do not address the underlying bone and muscle problems. If you choose this route, you may have to lay around for a week, unable to work, work out, or play with your kids.
You’ll recover faster with stretching and back exercises, if you know what to do.
As a chiropractor, I find with adjusting dysfunctional spinal segments and relaxing the affected muscles, people see immediate results. Many patients see a significant improvement in their Active Range of Motion after the first adjustment.
My patients regularly report an immediate reduction in pain, less spasm, and the ability to stand up straighter. Often, the need for OTC and prescription drugs is reduced or eliminated.
The simplicity and success of a chiropractic approach to Acute Locked Back Syndrome has been documented in numerous research studies and has helped many patients avoid risky surgery. If you’re looking for a natural, drug-free alternative treatment for low back pain: Choose Chiropractic.
