Spring Has Sprung!

The blossoms are blooming and tiny fresh green leaves are unfolding, telling us that Spring is almost here. Life underground is rising to the surface, ready to connect with the world. This upward and outward movement is the “energetic” of Spring.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Spring is the Season of the Liver.

When Spring comes, the Liver has a natural tendency to rise, just like in nature. Again, this is more of an energetic, rather than the Liver literally rising. This Liver energy is felt as motivation to “wipe the slate clean”, create something new or the desire to be more social. It’s no wonder why we naturally want to clean our rooms or houses with the coming of Spring.

So what about our bodies? Liver cleansing is a great way to clear toxins or excess hormones we’ve been holding on to. The Winter is a time of “storage”; we eat more rich and nourishing foods to keep our bodies warm and healthy in the cold. When Spring comes, we need to clean out the stores of Winter. Take advantage of the upward and outward Liver energy to clean out the foods & toxins that are slowing you down and subtly or profoundly keeping you from your optimal self. Doing a cleanse is one of the best ways I know to clear food sensitivities, eliminate cravings and help the Liver to do its job of detoxification more efficiently.

Start a New Routine. Incorporate Exercise and Regular Maintenance Treatments.

With more light and warmer weather, now is a good time to start a regular exercise routine. One of the main responsibilities of the Liver is to make sure the “qi”, or energy of the body, is circulating smoothly. Moving our bodies moves our qi. If the qi is moving, then we feel energetic and clear. This keeps the Liver happy and therefore our attitudes positive. In TCM, we have a diagnosis called Liver Qi Stagnation. There are many different symptoms involved with this pattern. Most relevant in this discussion is the symptom of irritability and anger. As the Liver energy rises, if the qi is stuck we feel frustrated and angry. Incorporating consistent exercise and movement, will keep our qi moving, and therefore our mood even and our Liver content.

Acupuncture, chiropractic and massage treatments also help our qi to move. Regular treatments help places in the body that have stagnant qi and blood to circulate and continue to flow smoothly. This will reduce pain, improve digestion, balance hormones and improve energy amongst many other benefits.

If you’d like to use the upward energy of Spring to bring yourself to vibrant health, Golden Chiropractic will be introducing a Spring Cleanse in April. Stay tuned for information on how you can join in!

Happy Spring!
